Reynoso Family Foundation In memory of Nelson Reynoso Jr.

Veterans · Military families · Neighborhoods under strain

The number comes first. Everything else we do comes after it.

The Reynoso Family Foundation exists because one family decided that what happened to them should be harder to repeat. We work on suicide prevention, PTSD awareness, and putting mental health help close enough to reach on the worst day someone is having.

Worried about someone else?

You do not need their permission to ask for advice, and you do not need to have the perfect sentence ready. Coaching Into Care is a free VA service that coaches family members and friends on how to start the conversation and how to keep it going after the first refusal.

1-888-823-7458 Weekdays, free, confidential

If there are firearms, medications, or a plan in the picture, ask the crisis line about putting time and distance between the person and the method. That single conversation changes outcomes more than almost anything else on this page.

02 — Mission

We support veterans, military families, and at-risk communities through suicide prevention, PTSD awareness, and mental health resources people can actually get to.

Most of the distance between a person in trouble and the help that exists is made of small, boring obstacles: a number nobody has saved, a clinic that stopped answering, a spouse who doesn’t know what to say, a week where nobody checks in. We work on the boring obstacles.

We are a family foundation, so we say plainly what we are not: not a treatment provider, not a crisis center, not a substitute for care. What we do is make the route shorter — then stay in touch after the emergency is over, which is when most people are quietly left alone.

03 — What we do

Three commitments

i

Suicide prevention that doesn’t end at the phone call

Safety planning walked through line by line. Lethal-means conversations with families, handled without lectures. A check-in list for the weeks after a hospital discharge, when risk is highest and attention is lowest.

ii

PTSD awareness in plain language

What hyperarousal looks like at a kitchen table. Why someone sits facing the door. What treatments have evidence behind them, and what they ask of a person. We run sessions for spouses, parents, and teenagers — the people who notice first and get told least.

iii

Standing with communities carrying more

Neighborhoods where loss is routine and services are thin get the same materials, the same trainings, and the same follow-through — delivered through schools, barbershops, churches, and the funeral week, when the whole block is listening.

04 — In memory

Nelson Reynoso Jr.

This foundation carries his name because his family refused to let the story end at the loss. Everything on this site is arranged the way they wanted it: the crisis numbers first, before the mission statement, before the logo, before anyone gets a chance to scroll past them.

Nelson is remembered by the people who knew him, and they are still the best source on who he was. His family adds to this page as they are ready to — and what is written here will always be in their words, not ours.

Say his name out loud, then save the number.

05 — Support us

What actually helps right now

We are early. That makes a few specific kinds of help worth far more than a general donation would be today.

  • Give your hours

Peer supporters, veterans willing to sit with other veterans, drivers for appointments, and volunteers to staff resource tables at community events.

    Volunteer with us
  • Sponsor something concrete

A print run of wallet cards. Room rental for a family session. Gas cards for a veteran getting to weekly treatment. Ask us for the current list and what it costs.

    Ask for the list
  • Carry the numbers

Print the wallet card, put one in your glovebox, and hand the rest to people who will not visit a website when it gets bad.

    Get the card

06 — Contact

Reach the family

A person reads every message. We answer as fast as a small family foundation can, which is usually a few days.

This form is not monitored around the clock. If today is the emergency, call or text 988 instead — veterans press 1 — or text 838255.
